Who Lives In a Pineapple Under the Sea ......

SPONGEBOB SQUARE PANTS! It seems after 10 years of being on television Mr. Square Pants still has a way with the kids. This is no exception to a very special 5 year old boy. When asked "what would you like your cake to be this year?" his only response "Spongebob!". This was of course 2 months prior to his birthday. What can I say, kids know what they want!

I'll Take Both!

Hello all!! It's been a while since I've posted anything on this site!! For all you ladies out there: you know that feeling when you find that amazing shirt/dress/shoes and then you find the coordinating accessory that would match perfectly with it?! You're immediately face the "choice" troll: do I get this or that... in cake world why not get both? I had a client who was celebrating both her sons' birthdays and was contemplating what to do on the cake: one or the other or two? I decided to marry both their interests into one cake and I think it came out pretty great. The top tier was for her two year old son who loves diggers and dump trucks. The bottom tier was for her eight year old son who loves everything LEGO. Ah  yes, the quintessential interests of boy :D

Clothing Optional

Before the "I do" there must be a party. A girl's last night of singlehood freedom. Yes, this time honoured tradition celebrated and worshiped by women year round. Some like to see dancing naked men, others, well let's just say others would rather jump on a stripper pole and bring out her inner sex kitten. For this sultry bride sensual cupcakes were created for this very special evening of fun, spinning, and bruises. Bras, flowers, pearl thongs oh my!

Solve This!

I'm always up for a challenge. Always. Something about having an incredibly competitive personality :) One of the things that has always baffled me was the ability to solve a Rubix cube in under a minute. People can DO this? Evidently a young man who celebrated his 13th birthday this past weekend can. Not only in under a minute, but under thirty seconds... CRAZY! It was only fitting to make a Rubix Cube cake to celebrate. However, I was later informed that the pattern I put onto the cube was impossible, as in it would never occur that way. You learn something new everyday! :D

It's a Spring Thing

In North America Easter is usually greeted by warm Spring weather. This year however, Mother Nature decided to throw us all a curve ball and let Winter hang around a bit longer. I am not impressed. So in my efforts to will Spring into the air I decided to help our economy by purchasing many cute Spring outfits and shoes.  Karma works right? Fulfilling loads of Easter orders will also MAKE Spring come right?... RIGHT?

Fondantless

I always love trying new recipes, if there were such a thing I would become a bakery R&D specialist.  This past weekend I was asked to make a traditional Italian Rum Cake. The one request from the client: no fondant. Music to my ears. I love how fondant looks and I love working with it, but in this fondant covered world of baking it's always nice to do something different.  An Italian Rum Cake is four layers of genoise cake with pastry cream filling and whipped cream to top. Oh, and the sponge cake layers are drenched in rum syrup! It's a similar process as making Tiramisu minus the mascarpone cheese frosting and coffee. The result: a tasty cake without being overly sweet.

Shoe Fairies & Hockey Sticks

Birthdays are a great way to celebrate someone's unique personality. This weekend is one of my good friend's 20-something (sorry a girl never reveals her friend's true age) birthday.  She is a sweet combination of wreckless hockey lover, a true die hard Leafs fan, AND the ultimate girlie girl. To celebrate her birth I decided to make cupcakes to reflect her wonderful self. Shoe fairy inspired cupcakes as well as Leafs hockey themed cupcakes. The shoe fairy cupcake was dulce de leche and the Leafs (which I think should be spelled "leaves", but whatever), was vanilla cake with apple cinnamon buttercream. Happy Birthday Lady C!
